Welcome to the Industry Insider! Today’s episode is all about how you can continue to perform well, even in the face of adversity.
Don’t Let Your Emotional State Degrade
There have been times in our lives when we were paralyzed by indecision, fear, or worry. Maybe you live in Australia and you’re currently dealing with the terribly destructive fires. Maybe you’re going through something else big in your life and it is an immense struggle for you and your family.
It doesn’t even have to be a super stressful scenario, though it certainly can be. It could just be any time that you mind keeps going down a rabbit hole that is not productive. It could be sleepless nights, worries about your health, worries about your finances. No matter how tough it gets, we encourage you to keep your emotional state from degrading! Here’s how we do it.
What’s a Counter-Activity?
When you are feeling stressed, it’s a good time to do a “counter-activity” to reduce that stress and get your mind off it. For Shane, he has often dealt with this by rebuilding a car, since that’s one of his hobbies and it keeps his mind and body busy. You could read or listen to a book, get outside and take a walk, or do any other activity to keep you busy.
Bonus points if these activities are productive, like reading a good business book, planting a tree in your yard, cleaning up your house, or getting fit at the gym. But it’s totally OK if the activities are purely fun and not so functional, as long as you’re reframing your mind and getting away from the negative thoughts.
You Can Keep Yourself Out of the Rabbit Hole!
Building these habits can be a process, but it is worth it. If you keep allowing yourself to go down that negative rabbit hole, it can be paralyzing. It will get harder and harder to get out. Don’t do that to yourself!
Stuff happens. You can become better as a result of these circumstances if you learn how to put your attention to things other than worrying about the problem. It’s as simple as choosing anything that you enjoy and doing it. Do what you can to get out of that bad and destructive emotional state.
Also, repetition is key. It has to be part of your daily practice to have these counteractivities. That way, you won’t get in too deep. A single workout or podcast can’t reframe your mind forever, so make it a habit.
Did you know that a poor emotional state can take away your ability to think critically? Did you know it can also decrease your ability to control your feelings and behaviors? But thankfully, raising your emotional state is possible for anyone to do. How will you carry this practice out going forward?
